3 Lip Care Tips for Beginners to Start Now

You’ve been sleeping on your lip care for entirely too long. And it’s one of the most straightforward parts of taking care of yourself. Even when prone to lip dryness or lip splitting and cracking. A lot of lip care is actually a small shift in already established habits. Like SPF lip balm, using a lip mask, and drinking water. The holy trinity of lip care.

Makeup feels just that much better when you know that lipstick, lip gloss, and lip stain alike are all going on an even canvas.

Drinking Water

The lips are one of the first places that show dehydration. Drinking enough water helps avoid, and heal, cracks and splits on the lips. There’s a good chance you may be dehydrated as it is! Especially if you’re drinking caffeine regularly– or smoke! Drinking water helps bring the moisture back to your lips, inside and out. Licking your lips does not count as hydration. Find hydration in the colder months by drinking some hot teas.

Licking your lips is going to make the lips dry and prone to splitting and peeling. Your saliva contains enzymes that irritate the lips because they are meant for aiding in food digestion. Nick this (pun intended!) in the bud by having lip balm handy to actually nourish and protect your lips! Reapplication after eating when your lip is split is paramount.

Investing in Lip Balm SPF

You have your favorite lip balm, now find one with SPF. Lip care should always start with moisturizing the lip, and protecting her. Thanks to SPF finally getting her time in the spotlight, lip balm with SPF is golden. Make sure to have one in your favorite bag. the links included are affiliate links, thank you for supporting me!

A few SPF Lip Balms from Sephora include:

The Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 from Jack Black works as the go to in your arsenal. No fuss required!

This Supergoop 100% Mineral SPF 30 Hydrating Lipstick for the girlies who want a little color.

The Isle Lip Balm with SPF 30 from Cay Skin includes Sea Moss and Aloe. Also perfect for the girls who love a good glossy lip WITH SPF.

A few SPF Lip Balms from Ulta include:

The COOLA Organic Liplux with SPF 30 which comes with a little tint to add a bit of flush to your pout.

The Aquaphor Lip Repair Stick with SPF 30 for the Aquaphor fanatics, naturally.

The SunBum Lip Balm with SPF 30 to match your other SunBum goodies!

SPF on the lips is going to be your non negotiable lip product moving forward. Using a clear lip balm or once that closest matches your natural lip shade is gonna make it easier to remember and use. Just like the SPF for your face– reapply every 2 hours if out and about in the sun.

How to Use a Lip Mask

Best practiced before bed, use a heavy lip mask! The Laneige one (shop via their virtual wonderland linked!) will always be a good choice and it comes in lots of different flavors/scents. Please use some kind of occlusive on your lips before bed if there’s not a specialized lip mask handy.

Things like Cerave healing ointment and Aquaphor work best when there’s a layer of a creamier lip balm under it. Protecting the lips at night with a heavier product accounts for occasionally breathing out your mouth while sleeping as well.

During the day, you can also make use of your lip mask in a lighter layer. Giving your lips the same nourishment, without the heavy tackiness of a proper application. A thicker formula every day balm is perfect for adding some needed hydration and fun color. Lip oils are a perfect medium for something that you can put on and forget about.
