Tips for Better Base Makeup: Concealer 101

When it comes to base makeup one of the most versatile products is your concealer. 10/10 times you only need two different concealers shades in rotation. One concealer a shade lighter than you, and one about the same shade as your foundation. Especially consider that both of these concealers match your undertone! The variety of looks that can be made with two different shade concealers is virtually endless!

The key to a flawless base is playing matchmaker with formulas and tone matching. Aside from the shade itself, make sure that the foundation and concealer have a similar finish and consistency. That way, you’ll have an easier time blending it out and it’s less likely to pill or smudge.

Concealer to Match Skin Tone

When the focus is a no make up makeup look you want a concealer that doesn’t bring attention to any problem areas on the face. This is the concealer shade you choose when you want to cover up acne, acne marks, freckles, or any general variation from skin tone. When used in the undereye area this concealer shade is going to show creasing less than something lighter. Focus the product on creating an even canvas without having to make it heavier by using more foundation. Concealer shades that match your foundation more closely melt beautifully into skin tints and tinted moisturizers.

Concealer Lighter Than Skin Tone

This concealer shade is about focus. You put this concealer where you want eyes to be drawn. It’s versatile for subtly creating highlights. Using this shade is perfect for more glam makeup looks. Under the eye area this concealer has the potential to make creasing more obvious. A lighter than skin tone concealer will create dimension with a heavier formula of foundation. When using a shade of concealer lighter than your foundation, it’s especially important to make sure that the finish of the concealer matches the finish of the foundation.
